Coming Soon: Three Films I Want To See Right Now

One of my favorite things to do is look through the internet for previews of upcoming films. And while the (geek) world is abuzz with Avengers-fever, I have a different perspective on what’s coming up next in theaters near you.  Here are three films I am most looking forward to seeing in the coming months:

LOOPER – Rian Johnson

After bursting onto the scene in 2005 with the film noir underground hit Brick, Johnson reunites with that film’s star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I am particularly impressed, and anxious to see this film. Johnson is an original voice in film-making, and really takes his time in selecting and working on his films. Plus, the last time Bruce Willis worked with young, unique filmmakers we got such modern-day classics as Pulp Fiction and The Sixth Sense.

SAVAGES – Oliver Stone

Based on a novel written by co-screenwriter Don Winslow, Savages boasts a cast that, well, should make for a great summer popcorn movie (Savages is slated for a July 6th release). Let’s consider some of the players: John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch, Blake Lively, Uma Thurman and Taylor Kitsch (unfairly maligned for John Carter and Battleship). Nothing like love, drugs and violence to get the ‘ol testosterone flowing, eh?

TAKE THIS WALTZ – Sarah Polley

I first developed a crush for actress/director Sarah Polley after watching her in two Atom Egoyan films Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter.  It was her eyes, at first, but then I noticed her deliberate choices as an actress in these films. It came as no surprise when I heard of her success on the indie film circuit with her feature-length directorial debut Away From Her. That film – like this one – examines the choices we make in a relationship. Aside from the eerily similarity to the Like Crazy, the trailer looks fantastic, and Polley is someone that I will continue to watch with great interest.
