There are not many occasions in life where one can meld their business acumen and personal passions – but for me, I am able to do so through volunteering with the San Diego Film Festival (SDFF). The Festival is produced annually by the San Diego Film Foundation, a 501(3)C non-profit organization that operates on a shoe string budget.
This year is the Festival’s 10th Birthday, and in honor of their celebration, they have produced a series called Film Pop-Up. The first event launches this Thursday, August 4th and will repeat the first Thursday of every Thursday leading up to the Festival. Here’s more about the first Film Pop-Up for this Thursday, August 4, 2011:
we at SDFF believe in the power of film and the power that film has to tell a story unlike any other media. THESE AMAZING SHADOWS reveals how “American movies tell us so much about ourselves… not just what we did, but what we thought, what we felt, what we aspired to, and the lies we told ourselves”. premiering at the 2011 sundance film festival, this documentary showcases the importance of the nation film registry, a roll call of American cinema treasures that reflects the diversity of film. featuring interviews from an all start line-up including Christopher Nolan (Inception), John Lasseter (Toy Story), George Takei (Start Trek: the Motion Picture) and Peter Coyote (E.T.) to name a few.
If that doesn’t convince you, how about this:
In conjunction with this series, the San Diego Film Foundation has launched their membership program, allowing the Foundation an opportunity to bring on additional staff (SDFF is currently run entirely by volunteers). With a full-time staff, SDFF can bring more great events like Thursday’s to San Diego all year.
Never before in its ten-year history has the festival looked to provide its fans the opportunity to become members and get advanced screenings and priority passes for the Festival. This – SDFF’s 10th Birthday – is the perfect year to launch each event – and if you are a San Diego area resident, this is a fantastic opportunity to become involved and see what it’s all about!
